Warren Publishing Co. / Warren Communications Inc.
Publisher: James Warren
Warren Publishing produced a dozen one-shot movie mags from 1977-1983, most under the heading Warren Presents. Several of these were "Official Collector's Edition" type mags covering a single movie, while Movie Aliens Illustrated (Warren Presents #4) and Dracula '79 (WP #5, both featuring all reprinted material) covered a then trendy aspect of fantasy films. The final three were FM yearbooks (again, all reprints), although the Famous Monsters connection was downplayed, somewhat, and the Warren Presents title was again used.
(The other titles in the Warren Presents line were all one-shot comics mags and included UFO and Alien Comix (1977), Future World Comix, Starquest Comix, Galactic War Comix (all 1978), Ring of the Warlords (WP #1), The Rook (WP #2), Alien Invasions Comix (WP #3), Strange Stories of Vampires Comix (WP #6, all 1979), Pantha (WP #8), Empire Encounters Comix (WP #9, both 1980), Sword & Sorcery Comix (WP #13) and Rex Havoc (WP #14, both 1981). There is no WP #7, 10-12.)
When Warren got wind that the publisher of the UK mag House of Hammer was planning to change the name to House of Horror and distribute the mag in the US, he quickly rushed out his House of Horror no. 1 in order to trade mark the name and, hopefully, quash the competition. This 34 pg. "ashcan" edition was completely made up of reprinted FM material and had a low print run (probably no more than 400 copies) and limited distribution. All of which helped make it one of the scarcest Warren mags. House of Hammer eventually changed it's name to Halls of Horror and got it's US distribution.

One-Shot Magazines (1970s)
There were dozens of fantasy film one-shots in the 1970s. Practically every high profile film had a magazine, posterbook, or trade paperback (or multiples of any, or all) devoted to it and there were also those one-shots that surveyed the entire genre, or a sub genre (vampire movies, etc.) To keep this gallery at a reasonable size, we will limit the choices to older style "monster mags", as opposed to the Starlog/Fangoria style "sci-fi/horror" mags.

Halls of Horror
Quality Communications Ltd.
Editor: Dez Skinn
1982 - 1984
The best selling British film magazine of it's time, House of Hammer was very well written by top talent, like John Brosnan, Dennis Gifford, Ramsey Campbell, Alan Frank and others. It featured excellent, colorful cover art with movie posters on most back covers. Combining features on current (especially those from Hammer Studios) and classic horror films with comic strip adaptations of Hammer films by UK comics artists such as Brian Lewis, Brian Bolland, John Bolton and others. Dez Skinn was the editor of Marvel UK, and had earlier helmed Monster Mag (Vol. 2) and later created Doctor Who Weekly and the long running sci-fi movie magazine Starburst.

In March 1978 Hammer's House of Horror was launched in the US with issue no. 1, a compilation of previously published material and the same cover art as no. 17. The title of the UK edition of the mag was similarly changed on issues number 19 and 20. Having earlier gotten wind of this, Warren Publications copyrighted the title and printed a few hundred copies of it's House of Horror no. 1, which forced Top Sellers to change the name, once again, to Hammer's Halls of Horror for issues number 21-23 (US 20-23), after which the mag was cancelled by the parent publisher. In 1982, Halls of Horror returned (now published by Quality Communications Ltd.) for a further seven issues and an all comics Dracula special issue.
